My Map is a work-in-progress summary of what I believe makes me tick both personally and professionally.

I drew it because I'd spent 10's of thousands of hours studying success, leadership, happiness, etc - and all I had to show for it was confusion. So I challenged myself to turn my mountain of conflicting notes into a simple one page Map of how I can do work and life better.

Below is a copy of my current MAP, and beneath it you'll find descriptions of each of the numbered areas
and links to some helpful blog posts.

Why Do I Get Out Of Bed? After a few false starts with passion and talent, I finally settled on this question to anchor my Map. This is the most fundamental question I have to face. And my answer is "to learn and share". And I consider this answer to be long-lasting - with me since childhood - not changing. Note: In prior versions of the Map this section was called Self WHY.

-2-

Notice that there are really two Maps here - Self and Work. And the point of note #2 is that there must be alignment between the Maps. As I look across any row I must make sure that my work is in sync with who I am as a person. Also note that I write and draw everything from the perspective of the business owner - the person setting the tone for the business.

Why Does My Business (MAP of ME) Exist? Please note that my answer, by design, is tightly aligned with the personal answer to "Why Do I Get Out Of Bed". And also note that this means everyone in the organization needs to be able to get behind the answer to this question. Great alignment at this basic level is critical for being flexible at high speeds. Note: In prior versions of the Map this section was called Work WHY.

What Environment Is Best For Me? You might think of this as core values, or personality, or defining characteristics. The point here is to identify a very small number (max of 3) of core traits that you associate with doing your best work. And I consider this answer to be long-lasting - with me since childhood - not changing. Also note that these strong traits may be double-edged swords. Note: In prior versions of the Map this section was called Self ME.

4a. Notice the word DuO included in sections 4 and 5 of the Map. It stands for - Do unto Others as you would have them do unto you. This is my catchall for the motherhood and apple pie traits that we usually cram into our value statements - honesty, integrity, respect for others... Of course these matter, but they only define you if you hang out or compete with folks that aren't honest and respectful - so they aren't differentiators.

What Environment Defines My Business (MAP of ME)? These are the traits that will define the environment that I create as a business owner. Notice that mine are identical to those found in the Self side of my Map (section 4). That's because I believe the owner must create an environment in his or her own behavioral likeness. I've seen way too many businesses with nothing at the core or random crap that the owner doesn't identify with, and that's a disaster. Note: In prior versions of the Map this section was called  Work WE.

-6-

What Do I Believe? I'm talking about ideas that have stuck with you long term. Ideas that you've thought through and are convinced have real value. It was in this section that I coined the term Wrong Stories as they have deeply influenced my thinking. In prior versions of the Map this section was called Self IF.

-7-

What Does Your Company (MAP of ME) Believe? In a perfectly aligned world these beliefs should echo your personal beliefs. Note: In prior versions of the Map this section was called Work IF.

-8-

What Am I Going To Do? You might think of these as self goals, but I'm not big on the word goals. These are things / systems I'm going to pursue and monitor. I only allow myself a total of three and I list ways to "measure" how I'm doing. You'll also notice the circled (?) question mark in this section and in section nine. That's to remind me that I suck at knowing whether achieving a desired outcome will be good or bad for me long term. It's been my experience that things I considered disasters at the time turned out to be gold mines and vice versa. Note: In prior versions of the Map this section was called Self CAN.

-9-

What Is Your Business (MAP of ME) Going To Do? These are the objectives for the business. In this section I've introduced the idea that Systems might be better for you than goals in certain situations. Note: In prior versions of the Map this section was called Work CAN.

That's it. Those are the main sections of the Map.
